Taking the first step toward counseling can bring up questions, and it is completely normal to want to know what to expect. Below are answers to common questions about our services, approach, scheduling, and policies. If you have additional questions, please reach out. We would be happy to help you determine whether Courtney Ruggles is the right therapeutic fit for you and/or your family.
How do I know if counseling is right for me?
Counseling can be helpful when you feel overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, or uncertain about how to navigate life's challenges. You do not have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Counseling can also help you develop healthier patterns, strengthen relationships, improve confidence, and better understand how past experiences influence your present.
What can I expect during my first counseling session?
The first session focuses on getting to know you, understanding your concerns, discussing relevant history, and identifying what you hope to accomplish through counseling. It is also an opportunity to ask questions and determine whether the therapeutic relationship feels like a good fit.
How often will I need to attend counseling?
The frequency of sessions depends on your concerns, goals, and individual circumstances. Many clients begin with weekly sessions, while others may benefit from a different schedule. Your treatment plan and session frequency will be discussed collaboratively.
What is your approach to counseling?
My approach emphasizes creating a supportive, collaborative environment where clients can better understand themselves, recognize patterns, and develop practical strategies for change. As a former teacher and coach, I value helping clients build confidence, gain new perspectives, and develop skills they can apply in everyday life.
How long does counseling take?
There is no single timeline for counseling. Some clients seek support for a specific concern, while others choose to work on longer-standing patterns or personal growth. Progress depends on individual needs, goals, circumstances, and the therapeutic process.
How do I schedule an appointment?
You can request an appointment through the online scheduling system on the website. If you have questions before scheduling, you can also use the contact page to reach out.
Is everything I share in counseling confidential? What about for minors?
Confidentiality is an essential part of the counseling relationship. Information shared during counseling is generally kept private, subject to applicable legal and ethical exceptions. These exceptions and the limits of confidentiality will be explained during the intake process.
Parents and guardians play an important role in supporting a child's progress. The level of parent involvement depends on the child's needs, developmental stage, treatment goals, and applicable legal requirements. Counseling also provides children with an appropriate degree of privacy to help them feel safe discussing difficult topics. Confidentiality expectations will be reviewed with parents and clients at the beginning of treatment.
Can I schedule counseling for my child if I am divorced or share custody?
Parent or guardian consent requirements depend on the circumstances, applicable law, and any relevant custody or court orders. Please inform the practice when scheduling if this is applicable, so that the necessary documentation and authorization requirements can be dissected and applied by the clinician.
What is your cancellation policy?
A minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required for all appointment cancellations or rescheduling requests. Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice or missed without notice may be subject to the session fee.
How do I measure progress in therapy?
Progress in therapy looks different for everyone and may not always happen in a straight line. You may begin to notice that you respond to stress differently, communicate more effectively, feel more confident, or recognize patterns that once felt automatic. Progress can also mean becoming more comfortable with difficult emotions, setting healthier boundaries, or approaching challenges with a new perspective. Together, we will identify goals that are meaningful to you and regularly reflect on what is changing, what still feels difficult, and what steps can help you continue moving forward. Growth takes time, and even small changes can lead to meaningful, lasting improvements.
